Wa Health Officials Beg for Help to Fix Funding Woes
The Wa Municipal Health Directorate in the Upper West Region of Ghana is facing significant challenges in providing quality healthcare to its residents due to inadequate funding and resources. The situation was highlighted at the 2026 Half-Year Performance Review Conference in Wa, where health officials called for stronger local partnerships to address the challenges.
Funding Insufficiency Exposed
Speaking on behalf of the Municipal Director of Health Services, Emmanuel Ormuorh, the Municipal Disease Control Officer, said the increasing demand for quality healthcare continues to outpace available resources. He stated that the Ghana Health Service cannot achieve Universal Health Coverage alone and requires strong partnerships with Municipal Assemblies, traditional authorities, development partners, corporate organisations, faith-based organisations, educational institutions, community leaders, and the general public to achieve sustainable improvements in healthcare.
The conference, themed "Mobilisation of Local Resources Through Stakeholder Engagements," aimed to mobilise local resources to support the Wa Municipal Health Directorate in addressing the challenges it faces. Despite collaborations with stakeholders on public health interventions, disease surveillance, maternal and child health services, immunisation, health promotion, and emergency preparedness, many health facilities still face major challenges.
Infrastructure and Logistics Remain a Challenge
Mr Ormuorh acknowledged that many health facilities still face challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited logistics, transportation constraints, staff accommodation issues, and increasing operational costs. He noted that these challenges cannot be addressed through IGF funding alone and called for stronger local partnerships to support the health directorate.
The health official also commended health workers for their dedication, professionalism, and resilience despite numerous challenges. He thanked the Regional Health Directorate, the Municipal Assembly, traditional leaders, NGOs, and other partners for their continued support.
Call for Transparency and Accountability
Mr Ormuorh urged health managers to demonstrate openness and accountability to attract support from partners. He stated that as health managers, they must strengthen their relationships with local authorities, businesses, philanthropists, civil society organisations, and their communities. They must continuously demonstrate transparency, accountability, and measurable impact to build confidence among their partners.
The occasion was also used to recognise and honour one staff member for demonstrating outstanding patient care, two staff members who had been transferred, and two retirees who had served the Ghana Health Service and the Wa Municipal Health Directorate for more than 30 years.
The Road Ahead
The Wa Municipal Health Directorate's plea for help highlights the need for stronger local partnerships to support the healthcare sector in Ghana. The conference's focus on mobilising local resources through stakeholder engagements is a step in the right direction. However, the challenges facing the health directorate are complex and require sustained efforts from all stakeholders to address. As the healthcare sector continues to face funding insufficiency, it is essential that local authorities, businesses, and communities come together to support the health directorate in its quest to provide quality healthcare to the people of Wa.
