Paul Afoko Takes Aim at NPP's Factionalism, Blames It for His 2015 Ouster
Paul Afoko, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful, has blamed factionalism within the party for his removal from office in 2015. Afoko, who is vying to return as National Chairman, said he believes internal divisions severely impacted his tenure.
Afoko Speaks Out on His Removal
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, Afoko described himself as one of the biggest victims of internal divisions within the party. He said although the events surrounding his removal caused him significant pain, he has put the past behind him and is now focused on rebuilding unity within the party.
Afoko stated, “If you want an example of somebody who has suffered from this factionalism, severely suffered, then I am the example.” He emphasized that factionalism was responsible for his removal, saying, “Oh yes, of course. It was disunity. It was factionalism.”
The Challenge of Managing Differences
Afoko acknowledged that factions exist in political parties around the world but argued that their existence is not the problem. Rather, he said, the challenge lies in how members manage their differences. He cited China’s ruling Communist Party as an example, stating, “But the cardinal rule for them is that they work together.”
A Fresh Start for the NPP
Afoko revealed that his bid to return as National Chairman is centred on healing divisions and bringing all members of the party together, regardless of past disagreements. He urged party members to move beyond past differences for the collective good of the NPP. Afoko stated, “I want all of them to know that this is the time for us to put aside any differences.”
Engaging Party Members Across the Country
Afoko has already begun engaging party members across the country ahead of the party’s internal elections. He said he has done two tours of the country, stating, “I’ve been around the country already. I’ve done two tours, and I went because I’ve been away for that long, 11 years.”
Afoko's decision to return to active politics has sparked interest in the NPP, with many party members looking to him as a potential unifying figure. As the party prepares for its internal elections, Afoko's message of unity and healing is likely to resonate with many members. However, the path to healing divisions within the party will be challenging, and it remains to be seen whether Afoko's efforts will be successful.
