MTN's $1.1bn Gamble: 80 New Sites to Boost North Region Coverage
MTN Ghana is set to construct 80 new network sites across the five regions of the north this year as part of a $1.1 billion investment plan. The ambitious project, announced as the company marks 30 years in Ghana, aims to expand coverage and strengthen service quality nationwide.
MTN's North Region Build-Up
The rollout includes 38 new sites in the Northern Region, 17 in the Savannah Region, 14 in the Upper East Region, and 11 in the North East Region. An additional site is planned for the Upper West Region, bringing the total for the north to 80. This significant investment is part of a broader plan to deploy 500 new sites across Ghana in 2026, described by MTN as one of the company's largest infrastructure deployments in recent years.
The Impact of Improved Connectivity
The focus of the new coverage is not just on numbers, but on what it will enable. According to MTN Senior Manager Emmanuel Kwei Afutu, the new sites will help farmers reach markets, students access online learning, businesses process digital payments, and families stay connected. In areas that have faced security challenges, improved connectivity will also support communication and safety for communities and security services.
Strong Financial Performance Supports Investment
MTN Ghana's strong financial performance is supporting the investment. In the first six months of 2026, the company's revenue rose 32.3% to 15 billion cedis, while profit after tax increased 46.8% to 5.1 billion cedis. The company also paid 5.6 billion cedis in direct and indirect taxes over the period. This financial stability is crucial in supporting the ambitious investment plan.
Addressing Challenges of Affordability and Digital Literacy
Despite the progress, challenges of affordability and digital literacy remain. MTN's Senior Manager, Emmanuel Kwei Afutu, acknowledged these issues and called for continued collaboration with government, regulators, and communities. As Ghana grows, MTN's ambition has moved from simply connecting people to connecting people to opportunities.
Looking Ahead
The rollout of the new network sites is expected to have a significant impact on the north region. With improved connectivity, communities will have better access to essential services, and businesses will be able to operate more efficiently. As MTN continues to invest in infrastructure and people, the company remains committed to supporting the growth and development of Ghana.
