Qatar Denies Capturing Iranian Pilots Amid Fighter Jet Crisis
Iran has accused Qatar of capturing three of its pilots, but the Gulf state has categorically denied the claims.
Iran's Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh made the allegations in a letter to the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), claiming the pilots had been held captive for six months. The letter also accused Qatar of violating international laws and regulations by not allowing the pilots to meet or contact their families.
Iran Calls for Release of Captured Pilots
Iran has called for the release of the three pilots, who it claims were captured by Qatar after they ejected from their jets during a combat mission targeting a Qatari military base. The pilots, Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Imran Behroshian, were allegedly captured on 2 March 2026, the third day of the US-Iran war.
Iran has also claimed that the body of a fourth pilot, Majid Kazemi, was returned after he was killed in the same operation. However, Qatar has denied all allegations, stating that it was "surprised by these misleading statements".
Qatar Denies Capturing Pilots, Blames Iran
Qatar's foreign affairs spokesperson, Majed Mohammed Al Ansari, said that contact had been made with the pilots "after they violated Qatari airspace", but that it had not received a response. He also stated that Qatar's search and rescue teams had carried out their duties to the fullest extent in searching for the pilots' remains.
Al Ansari added that Qatar had contacted Iran to co-ordinate the handover of the remains of one of the pilots that were recovered. However, Iran has yet to respond to Qatar's invitation for an Iranian team to visit Qatar to review the findings of its search and rescue operation.
Diplomatic Row Escalates
The diplomatic row between Iran and Qatar has escalated, with Iran accusing Qatar of violating international laws and regulations. The situation has sparked concerns about the safety and well-being of the captured pilots and their families.
Iran's Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh has called on Qatar to allow an Iranian fact-finding team into the country to investigate what had happened. However, Qatar has yet to respond to this request. The situation remains tense, with both countries trading accusations and denials.
International Community Watches Closely
The international community is watching the situation closely, with many countries calling for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The United Nations has called for restraint from both sides, urging them to resolve the issue through diplomatic means.
The crisis has highlighted the complex and sensitive nature of the US-Iran war, which has been ongoing since March 2026. The situation remains volatile, with many questions still unanswered.
