President John Mahama has announced plans to roll out a new district housing programme in Ghana, with a budget of GH¢500 million and construction expected to begin this year. The programme aims to address the country's housing needs and provide decent accommodation for citizens.
District Housing Scheme to Mark New Approach to Expanding Access to Housing
President Mahama made the announcement on Thursday, August 20, during a tour of the Saglemi Housing Project, where ongoing work is aimed at completing the long-delayed housing development. He said the initiative forms part of a broader housing vision his administration intends to implement over the next four years.
The Saglemi Housing Project, originally initiated under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, has been stalled for years due to legal issues and investigations. President Mahama said the project stalled after a change in government, citing the looting of materials and equipment as one of the factors that delayed its completion.
Saglemi Housing Project Update
President Mahama gave an update on the Saglemi project, saying about 700 housing units are expected to be ready for commissioning by March next year, with the total number expected to reach 1,500 by December 2027. He described the project as a vision that has been continued by his administration, despite the challenges it faced.
The completed Saglemi estate is expected to provide a conducive residential environment when the works are finished. President Mahama said the project is a testament to the government's commitment to providing decent accommodation for citizens.
District Housing Scheme to Tackle Ghana's Housing Deficit
President Mahama said the development of district housing is an important part of the government's broader plans to tackle Ghana's housing deficit and improve access to decent accommodation across the country. The district housing scheme is expected to mark the beginning of a new approach to expanding access to housing across the country.
The programme will provide an opportunity for the private sector to partner with the government in providing housing solutions for citizens. President Mahama said the government has provided GH¢500 million in this year's budget to support the programme.
The rollout of the district housing programme is expected to begin this year in selected districts. President Mahama said the programme will provide a conducive residential environment for citizens, and improve access to decent accommodation across the country.
