At 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, hundreds of corporate workers and business leaders gathered at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, trading office attire for running shoes and football boots.
The JoySports Invitational Tournament 2026 kicked off with an early morning health walk across the campus roads.
Participants moved directly from the walk into an energetic aerobics session before scattering across the university facilities to compete in sports and novelty games.
Ayawaso West Wuogon Member of Parliament John Dumelo attended the gathering as the special guest of honour, joining corporate teams on the field.
Pitch action and executive penalties
Football matches drew large crowds of cheering supporters as colleagues turned into teammates and competitors.
Corporate teams traded boardroom rivalries for tactical battles on the pitch, competing for bragging rights in front of spectators.
One of the major attractions of the day was the CEO Penalty Shootout.
Both male and female chief executives stepped out of their corporate roles to face goalkeepers on the pitch.
The penalty shootout brought out competitive drives as company leaders attempted to score while staff cheered from the sidelines.
Swimming, board games and novelty races
Action at the tournament extended far beyond the football pitch.
At the university swimming pool, corporate swimmers competed in timed races for individual and team honors.
Indoor and tabletop sports tested mental focus and quick reflexes. Players took part in table tennis, chess, Scrabble, ludo, and tag of peace.
The board game tables saw strategic battles as players worked through detailed moves under the eyes of spectators.
Novelty races added extra excitement across the athletic tracks.
Employees competed in the 100-metre sprint, testing speed against peers from other companies.
Others entered the sack race and the lime and spoon race, which challenged the balance and coordination of participants.
Corporate networking on the field
The event provided a physical venue for professionals to meet outside work settings.
Employees interacted with peers from competing firms, while executives held informal conversations away from boardrooms.
The setup allowed companies across different sectors to build relationships through physical competition and joint activities.
There were victories, losses, and close finishes throughout the day across all sporting codes.
Participating companies and institutional rosters
A total of 34 companies and institutions entered teams into the 2026 edition of the tournament.
State institutions and public sector agencies were represented on the ground. Participants included the Ghana Publishing Company Limited, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, National Petroleum Authority, Minerals Commission, National Identification Authority, and Tema Oil Refinery.
Educational institutions sent representatives to the games, with teams from Heritage Christian University and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) taking part.
The healthcare, medical, and insurance sectors fielded several competing organizations. These included Equity Health Insurance, Premier Health Insurance, The Chosen Hospital & Fertility Centre, Narh-Bita Hospital, and Piwak Natural Health.
Financial services, banking, and pension managers brought contingents to the University of Ghana campus. Teams represented La Community Bank, Old Mutual, Axis Pension Trust, SIC, and MoMo Fintech.
Private commercial enterprises, logistics firms, and hospitality companies made up a large portion of the participating roster.
These organizations included McDan Group, Labadi Beach, 3D Wireless Plus, Best Education Services Limited, Royal Kingdom Estate, Adansi Travels, AlSale Services, Valex Lease Equipment Limited, The Luckiest, Latex Foam, Volta Catch, Ayuda Hub, Sapholda Ventures, Toyota Ghana Limited, Virtual Security Africa, and Multimedia Group.
