Between 1990 and 2025, the total number of people worldwide living in extreme poverty fell from roughly 2.3 billion to 831 million. Most of that decline came from broad-based economic growth in East Asia and South Asia.
Sub-Saharan Africa has not matched that progress. Poverty rates across the region remain stubbornly high, even as overall global poverty edges downward.
World Bank estimates show that reducing poverty in these areas will require faster job creation. It will also require increased productivity in agriculture.
