Ghana recorded 955 maternal deaths in 2025, an increase from the 779 recorded in 2016.
Dr Kennedy Brightson, Director of the Ghana Health Service Family Health Division, disclosed the figures during a February 2026 workshop focused on pre-eclampsia and maternal anaemia.
He stated that hypertensive disorders remain a leading cause of maternal mortality across the country.
The national figures follow warnings raised during a national dialogue held in late 2025.
At that meeting, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, called for urgent national action to address the mortality rate.
