Ghana loses about 153,000 metric tonnes of locally grown tomatoes after harvest every year, even as market vendors face an annual supply deficit of nearly 300,000 metric tonnes across the country.
To close that massive shortfall, the government has introduced a targeted national programme to harvest 100,000 tonnes of fresh tomatoes from more than 10,000 acres of land.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture launched the Ghana Tomato Self-Sufficiency Initiative, known as GHATSI, at Anloga in the Volta Region on Tuesday, September 15.
The ministry is running the initiative in a direct partnership with private agribusiness firm FarmMate Limited.
