The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, met with the Ga Mantse, Nii Teiko Tsuru II, to discuss ways to boost maize farming and improve food security in Ghana. The meeting took place recently as part of the Ministry’s efforts to work more closely with Traditional Authorities.
At the meeting, Nii Teiko Tsuru II stressed the need for the Ministry to work directly with local leaders to share agricultural information and government programmes with farmers. He urged the Ministry to make maize production a priority, pointing out how important the crop is to the diet and livelihoods of people in the Ga State.
The Ga Mantse described Minister Opoku as a son of the soil and promised the continued support of the Ga State in agricultural initiatives.
Minister Opoku said the Ministry’s goal is to change agriculture in Ghana from subsistence farming to a profitable business that can provide sustainable jobs, especially for young people. He mentioned gains under the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, stating that Ghana’s maize production hit more than 4.6 million tonnes in 2025. This figure exceeds the estimated national demand of about 3.6 million tonnes.
The Minister said the government will keep working on measures to increase agricultural productivity and improve food security. He also emphasised creating opportunities for youth to participate actively in farming.
This visit is part of a wider effort by the Ministry to engage Traditional Authorities and other stakeholders to strengthen partnerships. It aims to advance agricultural development and food security across Ghana.
