Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old executive at The New York Times, was shot and killed in a car park outside the Dublin Sports Grounds in California last Thursday afternoon. Police say he was found with multiple gunshot wounds at around 3 pm local time. The incident took place in Dublin, a city about 35 miles west of San Francisco.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the killing. Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, McKinsey’s wife’s parents, both 77 years old, face multiple charges, including first-degree murder. They were taken into custody shortly after the shooting by an officer who happened to be passing by. According to witnesses, the couple remained near the scene after the shooting.
Witness Assad Razawi told KGO-TV in San Francisco he saw McKinsey collapse to the ground with blood on his head and chest. Razawi’s daughter said her father saw the couple walk together casually away from the scene after the shots were fired.
McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released any information about a motive.
The couple also face charges of felony conspiracy, willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and child endangerment. They are currently held at Santa Rita jail and are expected to appear in court on Wednesday to face the charges formally. It is not clear whether they have lawyers.
McKinsey was director of engineering for games player experience at The New York Times. The newspaper confirmed his death but has made no further comment.
The shooting shocked the local community and the tech and media industries connected to McKinsey. There has been no public statement from the family or from The New York Times beyond confirming the death.
At this point, investigators have not shared any details about what led to the deadly confrontation between McKinsey and his in-laws. The scene was described as a public car park near the sports grounds, a place usually busy with families and local events.
The charges against Zhang and Chen include serious felonies beyond murder, reflecting the gravity of the incident and the circumstances around the firearm’s use. Police continue to investigate the case.
