The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) confirmed it will arraign Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah in a weekend court session following his voluntary surrender on October 1. EOCO said it is working closely with the Attorney-General’s Office to meet constitutional deadlines and procedural requirements related to bail.
Nana Baffour Awuah handed himself over to EOCO at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 1. He is cooperating with investigators as they carry out further inquiries. EOCO’s statement on Friday, October 2, clarified that reports alleging the MP had been granted GH¢50 million bail were false and urged the public to disregard such claims.
Investigations and procedural activities involving the MP are ongoing, EOCO said. The move to arraign him over the weekend follows increased attention on the case and his earlier dealings with the agency.
The case escalated on Friday after Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin publicly questioned EOCO’s decision to search the MP’s residence, saying the court warrant only authorised a search of Nana Baffour Awuah’s law firm in Dzorwulu.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the MP in EOCO custody, Afenyo-Markin said Nana Baffour Awuah was surprised by the announcement that his home would be searched. “The court order that was procured by EOCO was very clear that they should only search his office, his law firm at Dzorwulu,” he said.
He added the court had directed that the search warrant be served on the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, suggesting EOCO’s actions overstepped the court’s mandate.
EOCO’s statement did not address the allegations about the search of the MP’s residence directly but reaffirmed that all investigative, procedural, and operational processes were underway.
The MP’s surrender and EOCO’s preparations for his arraignment come amid growing scrutiny of alleged financial misconduct linked to his activities. However, EOCO has not disclosed specific charges or details about the investigation.
This weekend court appearance will mark the next legal step in the case against Nana Baffour Awuah, as authorities continue their inquiries.
