The bodies of a seven-month pregnant woman and her husband were found with their throats slashed in a room at Kportorgboe, a suburb of Anloga in Ghana’s Volta Region. The man, Daniel Agbenyegah, 35, is suspected of killing his wife, Patience Awumee, before taking his own life.
Edwin Kwasi Vedzi, the Assembly Member for Anloga Kportorgbe Electoral Area, told the Ghana News Agency that preliminary reports indicate Agbenyegah, a mason, used a knife to inflict the fatal injuries. Awumee, who previously sold eggs, was between 29 and 30 years old and about seven months pregnant.
According to Vedzi, the couple had visited Awumee’s parents on Sunday and returned home around 11 a.m. on Monday. The incident reportedly occurred roughly 30 minutes after their return. They lived in the house of Agbenyegah’s grandfather alongside other relatives.
Neighbours said they had not been on speaking terms with the couple and noticed no signs of conflict or quarrels. Vedzi confirmed there was no known dispute between the pair that residents were aware of.
The police removed the bodies and took them to the Keta Municipal Hospital morgue for autopsy and further examination. Authorities have yet to officially confirm the circumstances, and investigations remain ongoing.
Vedzi urged the community to stay calm and cooperate with police as they work to establish the cause of the deaths. The tragedy has left residents in shock, and condolences have been extended to the families and loved ones affected.
The police have promised to release details once their inquiries and the autopsy are complete. The Kportorgboe community awaits the findings amid an atmosphere of disbelief.
