Seedorf back in football as Corinthians head coach

Clarence Seedorf has been named head coach of Corinthians, with the Brazilian club sitting 16th in the Serie A table, just one spot above the relegation zone. The former Netherlands midfielder signed a contract running until the end of 2027 and takes charge with eight league games remaining this season.

Seedorf replaces Fernando Diniz, who was dismissed last week after Corinthians lost seven consecutive league matches. The club’s struggles have brought fresh scrutiny, with the appointment of Seedorf marking his first coaching position since 2019.

The 50-year-old’s last managerial role was with Cameroon’s national team over seven years ago. His previous club stints include AC Milan, Shenzhen FC, and Deportivo La Coruña, none of which matched the heights of his playing career.

“Taking on this challenge is an honour, but also a huge responsibility,” Seedorf said upon his appointment. “I am here to give my all and build a team that fights for every ball, every minute, every victory.”

Corinthians’ squad includes former Manchester United players Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard, adding a layer of experience to a team fighting to avoid relegation in Brazil’s top flight.

Seedorf retired in 2014 after a playing career that yielded four Champions League titles. He won twice with AC Milan, once with Real Madrid, and once with Ajax. He remains the only player to have lifted the Champions League trophy with three different clubs.

His coaching career has not matched his playing success. At Milan and in his other roles, results were mixed and often underwhelming. Now, he inherits a Corinthians side in turmoil, tasked with steering them clear of the drop.

The Brazilian Serie A season runs through December. With just eight games left, Seedorf faces pressure to produce immediate results. His contract through 2027 suggests Corinthians are willing to back him beyond this campaign.

Seedorf’s arrival revives memories of his playing days, but the coaching challenge ahead is stark. The club’s fate will depend on how quickly he can instil resilience and turnaround results in the closing stages of the season.
