Africa World Airlines: the Ghanaian carrier that filled the gap left by Ghana Airways

Africa World Airlines, a Ghana-based carrier that began flights in 2012, became the country's leading domestic and regional airline after the collapse of earlier carriers. It connects Accra with Kumasi, Tamale and other cities, as well as Lagos, Abuja and other West African destinations.

For years after Ghana Airways collapsed, Ghanaians travelling within the country or to nearby capitals had limited choices. Airlines came and went. Africa World Airlines, which started flying in 2012, became one of the steadiest names on the departure boards at Kotoka International Airport. Its planes now carry passengers between Accra and Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi and other cities, and across the region to Nigeria and beyond.

Beginnings, routes and fleet

Africa World Airlines was established in Ghana and began commercial operations in 2012, starting with domestic routes. The airline flies between Accra and cities such as Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi, offering an alternative to long road journeys. It later added regional routes, including flights to Lagos and Abuja in Nigeria and other West African cities.

The airline operates regional jets suited to short and medium routes. AWA competes with other domestic and regional airlines, as well as road travel.

Ghana Airways' legacy, challenges and complaints

The collapse of Ghana Airways in the 2000s left a gap that private carriers like AWA tried to fill. Many passengers are business travellers, government officials and families travelling for funerals and holidays. Airlines in Africa face high fuel costs, taxes and fees, and restrictions on routes. The expansion of airports in Kumasi and Tamale has supported domestic flights.

Like all airlines, AWA has faced complaints about delays and cancellations. Ghana has discussed launching a new national carrier, which could change the market. Tickets can be booked online, by phone or through travel agents.

Why domestic flights matter and safety

The road from Accra to Tamale can take more than ten hours, and the journey to Kumasi is often slowed by traffic and road works. A one-hour flight saves a full day for business travellers, doctors, officials and families attending funerals, which is why domestic routes have grown steadily. Upgrades to Kumasi’s Prempeh I International Airport and Tamale’s airport have improved facilities for passengers and allowed larger aircraft.

Passengers often say they choose an airline based on reliability and safety, and regulators monitor carriers closely. Ghana Airways once carried the national flag on its tail. Today, a private airline does much of the work of connecting Ghana’s cities, one short flight at a time.
