SSNIT intensifies informal sector enrolment drive with Techiman float

A colourful SSNIT float rolled through the principal streets of Techiman, Bono East Region, on Monday, aiming to turn informal workers into pension contributors. Traders, artisans, farmers, and transport operators watched as staff handed out information and explained how to join the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s pension scheme.

The campaign formed part of SSNIT’s Self-Employed Enrolment Drive (SEED), a push to bring informal sector workers into the pension net. The float kicked off activity leading up to SSNIT’s Customer Service Week, designed to reach people who rarely visit offices due to busy schedules.

Alex Appiah, SSNIT Area Manager for Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, said the drive targeted those workers who “are unable to visit our offices due to their busy schedules.” He added that joining SSNIT “remains one of the surest ways for informal sector workers to guarantee their future.” He called the Trust’s product offering “unique,” pointing to monthly payments that continue for life after retirement.

SEED aims to provide a reliable income for informal workers during retirement or periods when they cannot work. Contributors receive monthly pensions for life and social protection during inactivity. The scheme also offers financial independence in old age and benefits for beneficiaries after the contributor’s death.

During the Techiman event, SSNIT staff spoke directly to traders and commuters. They explained how the informal sector—covering a wide variety of self-employed professionals—could join the scheme. The Trust’s message was clear: pension coverage should extend beyond formal employment to reach every Ghanaian worker.

This effort comes as the informal sector continues to make up a large portion of Ghana’s workforce. Traders and artisans often operate without formal contracts or social protections. SSNIT’s campaign attempts to bridge that gap.

The Trust’s staff described the pension scheme as a safety net, offering financial security when work ends. The campaign emphasises that contributions lead to consistent monthly payments after retirement, a benefit many informal workers currently lack.

The timing ahead of Customer Service Week suggests SSNIT is intensifying efforts to demystify pension schemes and bring awareness to communities outside the usual office visitors. For many informal workers, pension schemes remain distant or confusing concepts.

SSNIT’s presence on the streets of Techiman signalled an attempt to meet workers where they are, rather than waiting for them to come forward. The float’s visibility and direct engagement aimed to break down barriers and encourage enrolment.

The benefits outlined by SSNIT contrast with the irregular incomes typical in informal work. Lifetime monthly pensions and social protection during inactivity address the uncertainty many informal workers face.

SSNIT’s campaign in Techiman reflects a broader strategy to expand pension coverage nationwide. Whether this approach will significantly increase enrolment remains to be seen, but it represents a clear push from the Trust.

For now, traders and commuters encountering the SSNIT team had the chance to ask questions and learn how to secure an income beyond their working years. The effort brought pension discussions into the open, onto the streets, and into daily life for many who had never considered formal enrolment before.
