Dr Ekua Amoakoh, spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and chair of the party’s Health Committee, revealed that her grandmother was among the early organisers of the NPP in the Ashanti Region. She said her grandmother was a founding member of the party and served as one of its first treasurers in Ashanti.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express with Emefa Adeti, Dr Amoakoh described her grandmother as a member of the council of elders of the party. “My grandma is a founding member of the NPP. She was one of the first people to be treasurer in Ashanti Region. She is a council of elders—like she is,” she said.
The NPP was established in 1992, drawing from Ghana’s Danquah-Busia-Dombo political tradition. Dr Amoakoh’s account places her grandmother’s involvement among the early years of the party’s organisation in one of its strongest regions.
Dr Amoakoh said she spent much of her childhood with her grandmother, particularly during a period when her mother was enrolled at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). “I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. And I think I learned a lot of things from her,” she said. She added that her mother’s studies gave her more time to be with her grandmother.
Her grandmother worked as Director of Nursing at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where Dr Amoakoh grew up. Her parents encouraged her to study medicine, though she initially resisted the decision. “I’m glad they insisted because even if it’s not something you are going to practice or something you are going to use, that whole process of training, I think it can forge any person into a formidable person,” she said.
Dr Amoakoh’s interview explored her family background and the influences behind her career in both medicine and politics. Her grandmother’s early role in Ashanti’s NPP organisation connects her family history directly to the party’s formation and foundation in the early 1990s.
