Mr Drew’s X Space outburst would not happen under my watch – NanaYaw Wiredu

The confrontation between Ghanaian musician Mr Drew and a fan during an X Space chat would not have happened if the artist had been under NanaYaw Wiredu’s management, the media entrepreneur said this week.

The incident unfolded during a live session where Mr Drew was engaging fans and promoting his single Steeze. A participant addressed him as “chale,” a casual Ghanaian term used among peers. Mr Drew rejected the familiarity, insisting, “I am not your mate. A lot of people think I am their mate, but I am not your mate. A lot of the boys think they are my age mates. When it comes to money and age, I am not your mate, and you need to put that in your head.” The exchange escalated into insults, ending with Mr Drew threatening to block the participant.

The incident sparked debate on social media, with some users questioning the musician’s reaction while others called for respectful treatment of artists during online interactions. Mr Drew later clarified that his response targeted trolls rather than his genuine fans.

NanaYaw Wiredu addressed the episode during an appearance on Woezor TV’s Breakfast Café. He said, “Recently you saw what happened to Mr Drew. It will never happen under my watch.” He explained that artists working with him receive training on how to conduct themselves during television appearances, radio interviews, and situations where they might be provoked. “Because you don’t want to put somebody off by saying the wrong thing,” he added.

Wiredu was speaking in a discussion about building a successful music career. He stressed that artist development goes beyond producing hit songs and promoting music. It includes preparing musicians to handle public attention and maintain constructive relationships with their audience.

Wiredu’s career spans artist management, publicity, publishing, events management, and digital media. He founded Oneplay Africa and in September 2023 launched a free online Music Master Series aimed at helping emerging entertainment executives understand the business side of the music industry. Among the artists he has managed are Nana Yaa, D-Flex, and Mzbel. He also worked on events such as Ghana Meets Naija and Mzbel at 10. He currently holds the position of PR Manager for Edem Goget’em.

The Mr Drew incident illustrates the challenges artists face during live online interactions, where informal language and differing expectations can cause clashes. Wiredu’s emphasis on media training as part of artist development addresses these challenges by teaching musicians how to communicate clearly and calmly under pressure.

The exchange on X Space shows how social media platforms can quickly amplify tensions. Mr Drew’s insistence on respect tied to age and financial standing contrasts with the casual tone of the participant, leading to a breakdown in communication that drew widespread attention.

Wiredu’s comments suggest that professional guidance in handling such encounters can prevent misunderstandings from escalating. His approach includes teaching artists how to respond without alienating their audience or damaging their public image.

As the music industry in Ghana and beyond grows increasingly public-facing, incidents like Mr Drew’s raise questions about how artists prepare for the scrutiny and interaction that come with digital platforms. Wiredu’s remarks underline the role of management in equipping artists for these realities.
