The Ashanti Region took a step to widen the appeal of Taekwondo beyond competition when it launched the Regional Taekwondo Awareness Programme (RTAP) at Kumasi’s Baba Yara Sports Stadium on September 25. The event brought together officials from the Ghana Taekwondo Federation and the National Sports Authority, alongside representatives from the Ghana Olympic Committee, the Ghana National Council of Private Schools, and the Ashanti Taekwondo Association.
The programme’s theme, “Promoting Taekwondo Awareness, Discipline, Fitness and Youth Development,” sets out to push Taekwondo as more than a sport. Organisers want young people to see it as a way to build discipline, confidence, and fitness, and to develop respect for others. Frederick L. Otu, President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, said the sport needs more exposure to attract children early. He pointed to the benefits Taekwondo offers in shaping young people’s character as well as their physical health.
Schools have a role in expanding Taekwondo’s reach, according to Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, President and National Coordinator of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools. He urged deeper cooperation between schools, sports bodies, and other partners to open up more chances for students to take up the sport. Gyetuah said introducing Taekwondo in schools could encourage discipline and healthier lifestyles, while also spotting and nurturing sporting talent.
Nana Gyaama Dakwa, the Ashanti Regional Director of the National Sports Authority, stressed the need for ongoing support for sports outside the usual mainstream. He said programmes like RTAP can broaden the region’s sporting options and give young athletes a chance to develop their skills.
Edward Akanzu-Ise, Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools in Ashanti, added that making Taekwondo accessible to pupils is important. He said the sport can complement academic work by helping students improve focus, discipline, and physical fitness.
Local government leaders also voiced their backing. The Asokwa Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kamal, and Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang, known as King ZUBA, both supported efforts to use sport as a way to engage and develop young people.
A highlight of the launch was a demonstration by athletes from the Ashanti Taekwondo Association. They performed Poomsae routines, sparring, basic techniques, and self-defence moves. The display gave attendees a clear view of the skill, discipline, and physical training involved in the sport.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Frank Amoakohene, officially launched the programme by unveiling it in a symbolic ceremony. The event closed with a group photo and a media session including officials, athletes, and coaches.
Organisers said the programme will continue to promote Taekwondo’s role in physical fitness, discipline, self-defence, talent development, and the personal growth of young people. The launch showed a focused push to build stronger links between sports and education while expanding opportunities for youth across the Ashanti Region.
