Ampem Darkoa win protest as CAF annuls Edo Queens penalty victory

Ampem Darkoa Ladies have won their protest against Edo Queens after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) annulled the Nigerian club’s penalty shootout win in the WAFU Zone B Women’s Champions League qualifiers. The match, played on September 5 in Ouagadougou, ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and went straight to penalties, where Edo Queens won 4-1.

Ampem Darkoa challenged the result, arguing that the competition rules required 30 minutes of extra time before a penalty shootout. Their complaint pointed out that skipping extra time was against the regulations.

CAF agreed with Ampem Darkoa. The governing body ruled that the failure to play extra time was a breach of competition rules and cancelled Edo Queens’ penalty shootout victory. The decision means the initial result no longer stands.

The ruling sets up a replay between the two sides. The winner of this rematch will qualify for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League from the WAFU Zone B.

Ampem Darkoa now have a second chance to secure their spot in the continental tournament after their protest succeeded. The Ghanaian champions will need to focus on the field and deliver a strong performance in the replay.

Edo Queens will have to respond to the unexpected setback. Their initial win was overturned, and they must prepare to face Ampem Darkoa again.

This development adds a new twist to the qualification process. Both clubs remain in contention for the tournament, with the replay deciding who moves forward.
