The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) coverage in Dormaa West District has exceeded 90 percent, reaching 90.25 percent in September 2026, up from 89.01 percent the previous year. This puts the district above the 80 percent threshold used to measure progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) announced at the opening of a new NHIA office in the Bono Region district.
Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, NHIA’s Chief Executive Officer, said the district’s population of about 54,428 people spread across more than 96 communities has shown strong participation in the scheme. He thanked President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Finance, the NHIA Board, and other stakeholders for supporting the retooling and capacity building of the Authority.
The new NHIA office in Dormaa West is meant to do more than handle administrative tasks, Dr. Asare Bampoe said. It should be a place where NHIS members get quick help and their concerns addressed. He warned healthcare providers and NHIA staff against charging illegal fees or top-ups for services covered by NHIS. He also urged officials to educate members about their rights under the scheme.
To ensure sustainable healthcare delivery, Dr. Asare Bampoe said the NHIA has worked to increase service tariffs by 50 percent and has paid healthcare providers around GH¢1.7 billion nationwide this year. He called on NHIA staff to care for the new facility and use it to build trust, accountability, and responsiveness as Ghana pushes towards UHC.
Before the new office, the previous Dormaa West District NHIA office faced poor working conditions, the NHIA Bono Regional Director, Isaac Badu Amponsah, said. He described the old office as cramped, with unreliable electricity and poor sanitation. These factors made it difficult for staff and members, especially elderly people, pregnant women, and those with special needs, to access NHIS services.
Mr. Amponsah said he raised these issues with the NHIA CEO, who acted quickly to improve the working environment and service delivery. The regional director promised to keep working hard to support NHIA’s mandate and improve healthcare access across the Bono Region.
Vincent Oppong Asamoah, the Member of Parliament for Dormaa West, praised the local community for their involvement in supervising the new office project. He called on assembly members, heads of institutions, community leaders, and residents to stay engaged in development projects. He urged them to monitor contractors to ensure projects finish on time and meet required standards.
The opening of the new NHIA office comes at a time when Ghana is working to increase health insurance coverage and improve healthcare quality. Dormaa West’s achievement in crossing the 90 percent membership mark shows how local efforts, combined with national support, can push the country closer to universal health coverage.
