Government creates 71,000 additional SHS vacancies through private schools

Private senior high schools across Ghana have taken in thousands of Basic Education Certificate Examination graduates under a government arrangement that has added roughly 71,000 vacancies to the secondary education system. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced the figure on Saturday during an appearance on JoyNews' weekly current affairs program, Newsfile.

The Minister said the new places were created by bringing private senior high schools directly into the national admission process. The move comes as parents and BECE graduates continue to raise concerns over placements through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System.

For years, public senior high schools have faced heavy pressure during the annual admission cycle. The automated CSSPS system matches junior high school graduates with senior high schools based on their exam scores and choices, but thousands of families face uncertainty each year
