Real Madrid has demanded the immediate resignation of La Liga president Javier Tebas after he compared the club’s management and its TV channel to Nazi propaganda methods. Tebas wrote on X on Friday that Real Madrid’s communication “recalls propaganda mechanisms exploited by Goebbels,” referring to Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi regime’s minister of propaganda.
In his post, Tebas described Real Madrid’s management as directing “an orchestra of mouthpieces” with Real Madrid TV “leading the singing.” He said their approach involved “systematic repetition, construction of an enemy, and subordination of facts to the narrative,” techniques he associated with Goebbels.
Real Madrid called Tebas’s statement “deeply offensive” and “morally repugnant.” The club said the comparison was “absolutely intolerable and extraordinarily serious” given Tebas’s high-ranking roles in Spanish football as both the head of La Liga and vice-president of the Spanish Football Association (RFEF). The club demanded he step down from both positions.
“These statements constitute yet another episode in the repeated attacks by Javier Tebas against Real Madrid, its president and its media outlets,” the club said. It rejected Tebas’s later clarification that he was referring to “those propaganda techniques” and “not with an ideology,” saying the explanation did not mitigate the “institutionally unworthy nature of his statements.”
Tebas has repeatedly criticised Real Madrid and its president, Florentino Perez, in recent years. He opposed Real’s plans to join a European Super League in 2021 and described the club as having “lost their head” in 2025 after it sent a formal complaint to the Spanish FA over officiating in La Liga. Last month, Tebas also criticised Real Madrid for alleging a refereeing conspiracy against the club.
The ongoing conflict between Tebas and Real Madrid has intensified with the use of Nazi propaganda comparisons. Tebas holds significant influence in Spanish football, and his remarks have sparked a direct confrontation with one of the country’s most powerful clubs.
Real Madrid’s call for Tebas to resign reflects a deepening rift between the league’s leadership and the club’s hierarchy. The situation raises questions about the future governance of La Liga and the relationships among its major stakeholders.
