More than 300 residents of Nuba in the Jomoro Municipality have gained access to the National Health Insurance Scheme after a two-day free registration and renewal exercise. The event was extended from one day to two to allow more people to register, renew memberships, and replace lost or damaged NHIS cards.
The initiative was led by Emmanuel Kwasie Amihere, Assembly Member for the Nuba Electoral Area, also known as Ghanaman, with support from Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Member of Parliament for Jomoro and Deputy Minister of Transport. The first phase saw 75 new registrations, 80 renewals, and 15 card replacements, totaling 170 beneficiaries.
During the second phase, 133 residents registered for the first time, 70 renewed their memberships, and 50 had their cards replaced. These figures bring the total number of beneficiaries to 338.
Emmanuel Kwasie Amihere thanked Dorcas Affo-Toffey and the Municipal Chief Executive, Benedict Boadi, for backing the extension of the exercise. He said their support created an opportunity for more residents in Nuba to access healthcare services through the NHIS.
“The exercise has brought relief to residents, particularly those who might otherwise have faced difficulties accessing NHIS registration and renewal services,” Amihere said.
He praised both Affo-Toffey and Boadi for their dedication to improving welfare in Nuba and expressed hope that similar efforts would continue. He urged those who benefited to use their NHIS memberships to seek healthcare when needed.
Amihere also said he plans to work with other stakeholders to bring more development-focused projects to the area.
The NHIS provides health insurance coverage to Ghanaians, allowing access to a range of medical services. Registration and renewal can sometimes be a challenge in rural areas due to distance and cost, making free community-based exercises like this important.
This recent extension in Nuba helped hundreds avoid those barriers, opening the door for more residents to get medical care under the scheme.
