Two men died after they were trapped in a mining pit at Juaboso in the Western North Region over the weekend.
The incident happened on Saturday, September 26, around noon when the two descended into the pit to carry out mining work. They reportedly became weak while underground, possibly because of overheating and a lack of fresh air.
By the next morning, Sunday, September 27, the men had not returned. A friend went down into the pit to check on them and found them weak and struggling. Residents and community members quickly organised a rescue operation and brought the men to Juaboso Government Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital pronounced both men dead on arrival.
One of the deceased has been identified as Richard Oduro, known locally as Churches, who lived in Juaboso Township. The second man’s identity remains unknown and he is said to be a stranger to the community.
The exact cause of their deaths has not been officially confirmed.
This tragedy adds to a long list of mining accidents in Ghana, where many small-scale miners work in dangerous conditions without proper safety measures. The situation in Juaboso highlights the risks faced by those involved in artisanal mining, often in poorly ventilated and unstable pits.
Authorities and rescue teams have not made further comments since the incident. 3News said it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
