KNUST AI Coordinator urges structured adoption of AI in teacher education

Students in Ghana are adopting artificial intelligence faster than their schools can prepare for it, leaving institutions with no option except to establish clear rules for its use.

Professor Eric Appau Asante, the Artificial Intelligence Coordinator at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), told educators that rejecting the technology is no longer a realistic option.

Speaking at the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), Asante said teacher education must respond deliberately so that technology supports teaching methods rather than dictating them.

Pedagogy over technology

Asante, who is also the coordinator of AI courses at KNUST and a former director of the university's E-Learning Centre, addressed the conference under the topic "Transforming Research-Based Teacher Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities, Challenges and The Future of Teacher Preparation in Ghana."

The conference ran under the main theme "Transforming Research-Based Teacher Education in Ghana in the Era of Artificial Intelligence."

"Because if we introduce AI without reference to the National Teachers’ Standards and the National Teacher Education Curriculum Framework, we risk allowing technology to drive pedagogy," Asante said.

"And I would argue that the order must be the opposite. Our choice is not between AI or no AI. Our choice is between improvised, invisible AI use or structured, supervised and research-informed AI use," he said.

He described a changing relationship between teachers, students, and AI. In this arrangement, the teacher moves past transmitting information to become a designer, evaluator, mentor
