A 37-year-old man, Tibini Atta, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for defiling an 11-year-old girl in Digangan, a farming community in the Kpandai District of Ghana’s Northern Region.
The Northern Regional Police Command reported that the incident took place on Thursday, September 24, 2026. The victim reportedly went to a farm with Atta, where he allegedly had sexual intercourse with her. The girl suffered injuries serious enough to require medical treatment.
The victim’s uncle, who is a farmer, reported the case to the Kpandai Police at about 2:55 p.m. the same day. The girl was taken to the Kpandai District Hospital for initial treatment. However, the attending nurse informed police investigators that the girl would need further care and would be referred to Tamale Teaching Hospital due to the severity of her injuries.
Atta appeared before the Gender Circuit Court in Tamale on Friday, September 25. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted. The court sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Investigators from the Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Tamale have since visited the victim, who is receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Police say she is responding to treatment and that her condition is being closely monitored.
The Northern Regional Police Command added that it will continue to work with the hospital and other stakeholders to support the girl’s recovery.
