Ridge, Accra: the hilltop district of ministries, hospitals and colonial bungalows

Ridge, on a rise north of central Accra, began as a colonial residential area for officials. Today North and West Ridge host government offices, embassies, hotels, the Greater Accra Regional Hospital and some of the city's older bungalows.

The name describes the land. Ridge sits on a slight rise north of the old commercial centre of Accra, and in the colonial era the higher ground was considered healthier and cooler. British officials built bungalows there, away from the crowded streets near the sea. Today the area is divided into North Ridge and West Ridge and mixes government offices, embassies, hotels and quiet residential streets.

Colonial origins and the Ridges

Like other early European residential areas, Ridge was planned with large plots and wide roads. Officials and professionals lived in bungalows surrounded by gardens. Some of these buildings still stand, though many have been replaced by offices and apartments. North Ridge lies near Kanda and the Ring Road, and West Ridge stretches towards Adabraka and the city centre. Both are central, close to the Ministries area, Osu and the Airport road.

The hospital and government offices

Ridge is home to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, widely known as Ridge Hospital. The old hospital was rebuilt into a large modern facility that opened in the late 2010s, and it is one of the main referral hospitals in the region.

Many government agencies and ministries have offices in or near Ridge. The area’s central location makes it convenient for official business, which also brings heavy daytime traffic.

Embassies, schools and changing streets

Several embassies, international organisations and hotels are based in Ridge. The district is popular with business visitors because of its location between the airport and the city centre. Ridge Church School and other institutions are located in the area, and well-known schools in neighbouring districts serve its families. Ridge Church, an interdenominational congregation, is one of the area’s landmarks and has long served Accra’s expatriate and professional communities.

Old bungalows have increasingly given way to office blocks and apartment buildings, and land prices are high. Conservationists worry about the loss of colonial-era buildings and green space.

Living there and getting around

Residential property in Ridge is expensive, and much of it is occupied by organisations rather than families. Those who live there value the central location and relative quiet in the evenings, after offices close. Ridge is easy to reach by taxi or ride-hailing. Trotros run along the main roads nearby, and the area is walkable for short distances, though pavements are uneven in places.

Ridge was chosen because it stood a little higher than the rest of Accra. The ministries and hospital that now crowd its streets suggest that the city still treats it as a place of importance.
