Big Push: Major asphaltic works begin on Sunyani Inner-Ring project

Contractors have started laying asphalt on the 9.2-kilometre Sunyani Inner Ring Road, moving from the Fiapre Roundabout towards the Sunyani Technical University (STU). The work is part of the Ghana government’s ‘Big Push’ road infrastructure programme.

The site is busy with activity as Kofi Job Company Limited handles the dual carriageway project. During a visit, the Ghana News Agency observed steady progress on the asphalt overlay, which had begun at the Sunyani-Fiapre Roundabout.

Mr Kofi Kamkam, the site engineer for the project, told the GNA the company was focused on completing the road on schedule. He explained that work was currently concentrated on one side of the road to prevent blocking traffic. “We are presently working on one side of the road in order not to obstruct vehicular movements,” he said.

Kamkam also addressed concerns about dust generated by construction, promising ongoing management to reduce inconvenience. He praised residents along the route for their cooperation despite the disruptions caused by the work.

The road links a key junction at Fiapre Roundabout with the campus of STU, providing a bypass around the town centre. The Inner Ring Road is expected to improve traffic flow and ease congestion in Sunyani as the city grows.

The government’s ‘Big Push’ initiative has targeted various road projects to upgrade Ghana’s transport infrastructure. This 9.2-kilometre stretch is among the major undertakings currently underway in the Bono Region.

Work on the overlay came after foundational road preparations, including grading and base-laying, which were completed in recent months. The Kofi Job Company Limited has experience in road construction and is tasked with delivering this project within the agreed timeframe.

Despite occasional bumps to daily routines along the route, the local community has largely supported the effort. Businesses and residents face dust and noise but have maintained dialogue with the contractors.

The Sunyani Inner Ring Road will connect urban areas and educational institutions more efficiently. The section under construction is a dual carriageway designed to handle increased traffic volumes.

As the asphalt overlay progresses steadily from the Fiapre Roundabout, motorists and pedestrians will soon see a smoother, safer road surface. The project continues with a focus on quality and timely completion, according to Kamkam.

This road work forms part of a wider strategy to modernise transport corridors in Ghana’s growing cities. The stretch between Fiapre Roundabout and STU is one of several priority routes within Sunyani’s urban planning.

The government’s push to improve infrastructure aims to support economic activities and regional development. With the asphalt overlay underway, the Sunyani Inner Ring Road is moving closer to opening for public use.

For now, the pace of work and cooperation from those living near the site suggest the project will meet its deadlines. The road will soon offer a new route around Sunyani, easing pressure on existing streets and facilitating smoother travel.
