Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), has filed a lawsuit against Samuel Bryan Buabeng, a Facebook user, demanding GH¢10 million in damages over allegedly defamatory content posted on his social media page.
The complaint, submitted to the High Court, centres on posts published by Buabeng on September 22, 2026. Afriyie Opare claims the content falsely linked her to narcotics trafficking and abuse of office. The lawsuit seeks general, aggravated, and exemplary damages in the total amount of GH¢10 million for libel.
Afriyie Opare is asking the court for a declaration that the words and two photographs published on Buabeng’s Facebook page are false and defamatory. She also wants an order compelling Buabeng to delete the posts within seven days of the judgment.
The writ further demands that Buabeng remove every copy, share, or reproduction of the alleged defamatory material from any social media account, page, or internet site under his control. Afriyie Opare is seeking a court order requiring Buabeng to publish an unconditional retraction and an unreserved apology on the same Facebook page. She stipulated that the apology must have equal prominence to the original posts and remain pinned at the top of the page for 30 consecutive days.
Additionally, the plaintiff requests a perpetual injunction to prevent Buabeng, his agents, servants, or assigns from publishing the defamatory words or photographs again.
The writ requires Buabeng to enter an appearance within eight days after service, including the day he is served. It warns that failure to comply could lead to judgment being entered against him in his absence without further notice.
The case raises questions about the legal boundaries of social media expression and the responsibilities of public figures to defend their reputations in digital spaces. Afriyie Opare’s demand for GH¢10 million signals the seriousness with which she views the alleged defamation. The court’s response could have implications for similar cases involving online accusations against public officials.
