Amazon eyes Ghana for broadband expansion after talks with Mahama

Amazon has opened talks with Ghana over a possible partnership to expand broadband connectivity across Africa. The discussions took place in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly between President John Dramani Mahama and Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs & Legal Officer, David Zapolsky.

Zapolsky described the meeting as productive and pointed to Ghana’s potential role in the company’s plans to extend high-speed internet access to underserved communities, especially in rural areas. The talks focused on collaboration in technology and digital connectivity.

Improved broadband could support digital education, healthcare services, financial inclusion, e-commerce, and other tech-driven sectors in Ghana. For Amazon, expanding internet access aligns with efforts to grow digital markets and provide opportunities for entrepreneurs across Africa.

President Mahama has been pushing to attract investment and technology partnerships from major US corporations. At a separate US–Ghana Presidential Roundtable held during the General Assembly, Mahama urged for a new chapter in bilateral relations focused on trade, investment, technology, skills development, and job creation instead of traditional development aid.

A partnership with Amazon fits into that broader agenda. Ghana aims to position itself as a digital and technology hub in West Africa, boosted by its role as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat. This status could make Ghana an attractive base for international companies seeking to access the wider African market.

The talks come at a time when connectivity remains patchy in many parts of Africa. Ghana’s government sees broadband expansion as essential to supporting economic growth and improving the delivery of public services.

While no deal has been announced, the engagement signals growing interest from global tech giants in Africa’s digital potential. Amazon’s involvement could bring investment, technology, and expertise to Ghana’s efforts to close the digital divide.

The meeting in New York highlights Ghana’s strategy to deepen economic ties with the US beyond aid. It also underlines the country’s ambition to develop its digital economy and tap into new opportunities created by the continent’s expanding internet access.

For Amazon, Ghana offers a strategic partner on the continent, with a stable political environment and a growing tech ecosystem. Whether this initial contact leads to concrete projects remains to be seen, but the dialogue sets the stage for future collaboration.

The outcome of these talks will be closely watched by businesses and policymakers across Africa, as broadband access remains a major challenge and opportunity for development on the continent.
