Eric Tinkler’s sudden exit as Asante Kotoko coach after just two months was no surprise to football analyst Kojo Addae Mensah. Speaking to Luv FM, Addae Mensah said he had predicted the South African coach would face a “cultural shock” that would eventually force him out.
Tinkler resigned following a 1-0 loss to 10-man Aduana Stars in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday. The club announced they “agreed to the request of its Head Coach, Eric Tinkler, to be released from his contract with the Club effective immediately for personal reasons.”
Addae Mensah said the challenges Tinkler faced started soon after his appointment. “But when Tinkler was appointed, I said he is going to have a cultural shock. By the time he settles, we probably will be off pace to be able to win this title,” he said.
His prediction was based on experience. Addae Mensah has covered Kotoko as a columnist and travelled with the team on training trips to South Africa. He recalled the quality of football facilities there, which he said were far ahead of those in Ghana. “In South Africa, even primary school pitches are top notch,” he said. “Anytime we go down to South Africa, we were training on pitches for schools, with flood lights and everything.”
He said the difference in football infrastructure and playing surfaces was a big adjustment for Tinkler. “So honestly speaking, it has come earlier than I expected. It hasn’t come as a shock to me at all because he’s going to have cultural shock,” Addae Mensah said.
Tinkler’s tenure at Kotoko included one league win out of four matches. He did lead the team to victory in the 2026 Democracy Cup, beating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak on penalties.
The club’s statement cited personal reasons for Tinkler’s departure but did not elaborate further. Kotoko has yet to announce a replacement coach.
Addae Mensah’s comments reflect wider concerns about the ability of foreign coaches to adapt quickly to Ghanaian football conditions. The gap in resources and infrastructure between countries can be significant, and not all coaches manage the transition smoothly.
Tinkler’s quick exit adds to a pattern of brief coaching spells at some Ghanaian clubs. Kotoko will now face the challenge of finding stability in the dugout as the league season continues.
