Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Kojo Bonsu, has launched a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme for young Ghanaians during a visit to Zhoukou, a major inland port and logistics hub in China. The China-Ghana Youth AI Talent Development Programme aims to equip Ghana’s youth with skills to develop technology solutions tailored to the country’s needs.
The initiative builds on Ambassador Bonsu’s earlier Gen Z AI Club. It is being run in partnership with APUS Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese tech company. Zhoukou Normal University will offer AI courses and scholarships to selected Ghanaian students as part of the programme.
Ambassador Bonsu told students gathered for the launch that Africa’s young population holds great potential. “Africa has one of the world’s youngest populations, an enormous reservoir of talent, creativity and potential,” he said. He added that the programme would help young Ghanaians create practical AI applications for sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and education. “We want Ghanaian youth to build AI solutions for our farms, our hospitals, our classrooms.”
The programme connects training with employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. APUS Technology plans to offer internships and job contracts to outstanding students from both China and Ghana during the one-year programme. These roles will focus on developing AI tools relevant to Ghana’s economic and social priorities.
Besides skills development, the programme exposes participants to China’s expanding technology ecosystem. This practical experience could support Ghana’s ongoing efforts to digitise its economy and public services.
The China-Ghana Youth AI Talent Development Programme expands cooperation between the two countries beyond traditional areas like trade and infrastructure. It places young people at the centre of this partnership by providing opportunities in new technologies.
Supporters say the programme offers a clear path for young Ghanaians to gain specialised AI knowledge while addressing local challenges in key sectors. The launch in Zhoukou underlines the growing ties between Ghana and China in technology and youth innovation.
Ambassador Bonsu encouraged participants to focus on learning, innovation, and leadership throughout the programme. The initiative reflects a broader effort to open new opportunities for Ghana’s younger generation as the country develops its digital economy.
