Andy Burnham, the newly appointed Prime Minister of Britain, has made it clear that he is willing to confront US President Donald Trump if it means defending Britain's national interest. In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Burnham stated that he would "of course" call out Trump if it was the right thing to do.
Burnham's Stance on Trump
Burnham's comments come as a response to his first major interview as Prime Minister, where he discussed his approach to dealing with the US President. When asked if he would trust Trump, Burnham said, "it's a changing world, isn't it, and you just obviously have to call things as they develop." He also stated that he would not commit to taking a different opinion from Trump, but would instead voice a different idea that is right for Britain.
Defence Spending and the Role of the US
Burnham's interview also touched on the topic of defence spending, with the Prime Minister refusing to commit to a date for increasing Britain's defence spending to 3% of GDP. His Chancellor, John Healey, has previously stated that unless a commitment is made to spend that amount by 2030, the country would not be safe. Burnham acknowledged Healey's concerns, but said that the government would need to work out the way of doing that.
Reaction from the Opposition
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp responded to Burnham's comments, stating that the US is a long-standing ally and that Britain needs to have good relations with them. However, Philp also emphasized that if the US does something that Britain disagrees with, they should "honestly say so." Philp also dismissed Burnham's ruling out of an early general election before 2029, saying that the Conservatives are ready to fight an election whenever it happens.
Burnham's willingness to confront Trump if necessary has sparked a lot of interest in the UK and beyond.
