Accra is short of green space. Its roads are crowded and its neighbourhoods dense. That is why, on weekends, families, students and couples head to a quiet corner of the University of Ghana campus, where trees, lakes and walkways offer a break from the city.
Where it is
Legon Botanical Gardens is located within the University of Ghana at Legon, in the northern part of Accra. It is easy to reach from East Legon, Madina and other nearby suburbs.
Who runs it
The gardens are owned by the University of Ghana and managed by the university’s Department of Botany together with a private company, Mulch Company Ltd. The partnership turned the gardens into a recreational centre while keeping them linked to the university’s research and teaching.
The size
The gardens cover about 50 hectares of natural vegetation, with trees, grassland and water. It is one of the largest green spaces open to the public in the Accra area.
Canopy walk
One of the main attractions is the canopy walkway, suspended among the trees. Visitors can walk high above the ground and see the forest from a different angle. It is popular with children and adventurous adults.
Lakes and paths
The gardens include lakes and walking paths, good for a slow stroll, photography or simply sitting in the shade. Birdwatchers often spot a variety of species.
Playground and picnics
There is a playground for children and open lawns where families spread mats for picnics. Birthday parties and small gatherings are common on weekends.
School trips
Schools bring pupils to learn about plants, trees and the environment. The gardens’ link to the Department of Botany makes them useful for education as well as leisure.
Photos and events
Couples use the gardens for pre-wedding photos, and some events and small ceremonies are held there, subject to arrangements with the management.
Tips for visitors
Check opening hours and entry fees before you go, as they can change. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and insect repellent, and go early on hot days. Weekends are busiest.
Respect the space
Take rubbish home or use the bins, keep to the paths in sensitive areas and follow instructions on the canopy walk. The gardens stay pleasant only if visitors look after them.
Green lungs for the city
As Accra grows, spaces like Legon Botanical Gardens become more valuable. A few hours under the trees is a reminder that the city was once far greener, and that it is worth protecting what remains.
