MTN set to deploy 5G services after winning spectrum licenses worth US$202m

MTN Ghana is preparing to launch 5G services after securing spectrum licenses worth $202 million from the National Communications Authority (NCA). The telecom giant announced it has been awarded spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands, following an invitation to apply for licenses in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, and 3 GHz mid-band frequencies. These licenses will enable MTN to expand its mobile broadband and 5G network across Ghana.

In a notice to investors and shareholders, MTN said it is finalising the formalities and payment obligations linked to the licence acquisition. The company confirmed that the licence payments have been integrated into its equity free cash flow outlook. The $202 million figure covers the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands.

MTN Ghana plans to deploy the newly acquired 5G spectrum alongside its existing spectrum assets. The move aims to increase network capacity, improve service quality, and upgrade customer experience nationwide. The company also said that this spectrum will support its growth ambitions in 5G mobility and its goal to expand home connectivity throughout Ghana.

The telecom firm promised to keep the market updated on significant developments as it progresses with deploying the new spectrum and rolling out high-speed 5G services.

“The company appreciates the continued support of its shareholders and other stakeholders as it undertakes this strategic investment,” MTN added in its circular.

The NCA’s allocation of spectrum in the mid-band frequencies follows global trends where 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands are commonly used for 5G deployment due to their balance of coverage and capacity.

MTN Ghana’s move comes at a time when the demand for faster mobile broadband is increasing, driven by growing internet penetration and digital services adoption in the country. The 5G rollout will compete with existing 4G networks and could impact the digital landscape for consumers and businesses alike.

The company’s statement did not specify exact timelines for the 5G launch but indicated that processes are underway after the licence award.

MTN Ghana’s investment of over $200 million in spectrum licenses is among the largest in the country’s telecommunications sector in recent years. It reflects the increasing value of spectrum assets as networks transition to next-generation technologies.

No other Ghanaian telecom operators have yet announced similar 5G spectrum acquisitions or rollout plans following this NCA licensing round.

MTN’s announcement arrives amid a period of rapid technological change in Africa’s telecom markets, where operators are racing to introduce 5G to meet consumer and enterprise demand.

The rollout of 5G could affect the country’s music and entertainment industries, which rely increasingly on digital platforms for distribution and streaming, though MTN did not comment on specific sector impacts.

MTN Ghana’s finalisation of the $202 million transaction signals a major step in the country’s telecommunications evolution, with 5G services expected to expand access to faster internet speeds and new digital experiences.
