Harry Styles debuts new track in memory of Liam Payne

Harry Styles stepped onto the stage at Madison Square Garden on the second anniversary of Liam Payne’s death and performed an unreleased song he wrote for his former One Direction bandmate. The track, titled “What Is Enough,” made its live debut during Styles’ sold-out concert on Friday night.

Styles, who is currently on a residency at the New York venue as part of his Together, Together tour, paused before the performance to address the crowd. He spoke about Payne as a friend and someone integral to his journey. “There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without,” he said. “And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”

The crowd responded with cheers as Styles honoured Payne, who died after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina in 2022. Wearing a royal blue jumper with a red collar, Styles urged fans to look after each other. “I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other.”

He thanked those who had supported him throughout his career, adding, “There are so many more people who have touched my life in such special ways.” Then, amid enthusiastic applause, he began playing “What Is Enough” on guitar. The song’s lyrics were emotional and reflective, carried by a melodic accompaniment from his band.

Fans took to Instagram after the show to describe the new song as “beautiful.” Styles’ solo career began in 2017 after One Direction’s global success. His first album and single both reached number one in the UK. His 2022 album Harry’s House won him a Grammy and a Brit Award.

Payne’s death in 2022 shocked fans and the music community. Styles’ tribute and the unveiling of “What Is Enough” provided a rare glimpse of a song written in memory of Payne. The performance was a moment of quiet reflection amid the energy of a major tour stop at one of music’s most iconic venues.
