Energy Committee yet to receive July 29 blackout report – Adomako-Mensah

A nationwide power outage on July 29, 2026, left many in the dark, and two months later, the report on the incident remains elusive. The Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament's Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, says his committee has not been furnished with the full report.

GRIDCo Fails to Deliver Report to Parliament

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) indicated that the report had been submitted to the Energy Minister, but members of the committee have not received a copy. Collins Adomako-Mensah said the committee has only come across commentaries on the report through social media and major news platforms, making it difficult for Parliament to independently assess its findings.

The committee needs access to the full report to properly understand what caused the outage and assess whether the recommended corrective measures have been implemented. Mr. Adomako-Mensah stressed that although power was restored relatively quickly after both incidents, the recurrence of nationwide disruptions requires urgent attention to prevent further failures.

Committee to Summon GRIDCo and Energy Minister

Mr. Adomako-Mensah expects the Energy Committee to invite GRIDCo and the Minister to appear before it when Parliament reconvenes on Monday, August 24, for urgent legislative business. He said he thinks the committee must recall GRIDCo and the Minister to give them exactly where the problems are.

This move comes after another major power outage on Thursday, August 20, 2026, raising fresh concerns about the stability and resilience of Ghana's power system. The recurrence of major power disruptions within a month is worrying, and Parliament must demand clear answers from GRIDCo and the Energy Minister.

Power Disruptions Raise Concerns

Although power was restored relatively quickly after both incidents, the recurrence of nationwide disruptions requires urgent attention. Collins Adomako-Mensah described the situation as worrying and said Parliament must demand clear answers from GRIDCo and the Energy Minister.

The Energy Committee's frustration with the missing report highlights the need for transparency and accountability in Ghana's power sector. As the country continues to grapple with power outages, it is crucial that Parliament gets to the bottom of what caused these incidents and what measures are being taken to prevent them in the future.
