Floodwaters swept through Hohoe Zongo, Galikorfe, and the stretch from Kiki’s to Atabu Junction. Local roads in these areas became unusable, trapping residents and disrupting daily life.
Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, Hohoe’s Member of Parliament, described the flooding as “a matter of serious concern.” In a Facebook post, he expressed sympathy for those affected and urged calm while relief efforts continue. “The severity of flooding in parts of Hohoe has resulted in varying degrees of damage and loss, affecting homes, properties and the livelihoods of some residents,” he wrote. “I fully appreciate the difficulties and distress this situation has caused, and I encourage affected residents to remain calm as efforts are being intensified to address the situation.”
Officials from the Hohoe Municipal Assembly are on the ground assessing damage. The Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Physical Planning Officer, engineers, and staff from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are documenting the flood’s impact. Their findings will guide interventions to reduce damage and prevent future flooding.
The flooding has compounded challenges in a region where many depend on local roads for trade and transport. The overflow of River Dayi marks one of the heaviest downpours recorded in recent years, catching many residents off guard.
At present, no official count of displaced residents or property damage value has been released. The government has not announced emergency relief funds or plans for rebuilding, but the ongoing assessment suggests action is underway.
