French customs officers at the Port of Dunkirk opened a container of plastic waste shipped from Ghana on September 7 and discovered 3.9 metric tonnes of cocaine worth an estimated €225 million.
The contraband was packed into 167 individual bales inside the shipping container, which had left Ghana and was scheduled to dock in Antwerp, Belgium.
The interception has triggered an international law enforcement response that now centers on criminal networks operating inside Ghana.
