A 17-year-old girl was stabbed to death in a brutal sword attack at a high school in central Sweden on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at Brinell School in Fagersta, a town 170km north-west of the capital, Stockholm.
Tragic Attack at Brinell School
Two boys aged 12 and 17 were also seriously injured in the attack, while a third person sustained minor injuries. Police have confirmed that the 17-year-old girl, who has not been named, was the victim of a deadly sword attack. The school had only just returned to the classroom following the summer break.
An 18-year-old man, who has not been named, was arrested and police are treating the case as murder and attempted murder. The police later confirmed they fired shots after being called to the scene, but did not say whether the alleged attacker was hit before he was detained. Sweden's public broadcaster reported that the suspect was wearing a helmet.
Emergency Response and Investigations
The region went into a state of emergency on Friday, but it had ended by Saturday. Investigators have already carried out two house searches in connection with the suspect, police said. The school has just under 500 students on its roster, according to SVT.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson visited the school on Saturday morning, where flower tributes have been laid to honour the victims. He described the attack as a "serious incident" and said "we do not know what lies behind the act, but we know that police are working very intensively" in a post on X. Opposition leader Magdalena Andersson also visited the school, showing solidarity with the students and the community.
Reactions and Tributes
Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf received the news "with dismay and sadness". Students at the school are said to be shaken by the attack, and many are still coming to terms with the tragic events. The community is rallying around the victims and their families, with tributes and messages of support pouring in from across the country.
The attack has raised questions about school safety and the need for increased security measures in schools. While the exact circumstances of the attack are still unclear, it is evident that something went terribly wrong. As the investigation continues, the community will be waiting with bated breath for answers and a sense of justice.
