Nationwide Blackouts: Adomako-Mensah Warns of 'Cause for Worry

Ghana has experienced two major nationwide power outages within a month, with the latest occurring on Thursday morning. The widespread blackout, which followed a similar incident on July 29, has raised concerns about the country's power system.

Energy Committee to Investigate Nationwide Blackouts

Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament's Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has expressed worry over the frequency and scale of the outages. "Within a space of one month, we've had two major shutdowns, which virtually affect everywhere in Ghana, and that is a cause for worry," he said.

Adomako-Mensah's comments come after the Energy Committee announced plans to invite GRIDCo and the Energy Minister to appear before it when Parliament reconvenes on Monday, August 24. The committee aims to establish the causes of the outages and determine whether appropriate measures are being implemented to prevent further system-wide failures.

Calls for Urgent Action from Authorities

While officials have managed to restore power after both incidents, Adomako-Mensah stressed that the repeated disruptions remain troubling. He expects the Energy Committee to get to the bottom of the issues and ensure that measures are in place to prevent future failures.

Ghana's power system has been plagued by issues in recent years, with the latest outages causing disruptions to businesses and households across the country. The frequency and scale of the outages have raised concerns about the country's ability to provide reliable power to its citizens.

What's Next for Ghana's Power System?

The Energy Committee's investigation is set to begin on Monday, August 24, when Parliament reconvenes. GRIDCo and the Energy Minister will be called to appear before the committee to explain the causes of the outages and provide solutions to prevent future failures. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched by citizens and businesses alike, who are eager to see improvements in Ghana's power system.
